BEAUNEVEU, André

(b. ~1330 Valenciennes, d. 1402 Bourges)

French sculptor and illuminator from Valenciennes, who worked for the French court, Louis de Mâle, Count of Flanders, and the Duc de Berry. Four of the royal effigies in Saint-Denis came from his workshop (Philip VI, John II, Charles V and his queen). The only illuminations certainly by him are the Prophets and Apostles of the Duc de Berry’s Psalter (Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, 1380-85). Beauneveu’s style in sculpture and painting looked forward to the general northern European trend towards naturalism in the 15th century.

The miniature representing King David is from the Psalter of the Duc de Berry.

A particularly interesting fact about the Duc de Berry’s Psalter is that the twenty-four miniatures representing apostles, evangelists and prophets were painted by one of the well-known sculptors of the period, the Fleming Andr Beauneveu. Beauneveu had previously been in the service of Charles V and executed the royal tombs being erected in the Abbey of Saint Denis. Contemporary sources also refer to his work as a sculptor in Flanders. From 1386 onwards he worked for the Duc de Berry and painted the miniatures of the Psalter in the years before his death. In the inventory of the Duke’s manuscripts, made in 1402, Beauneveu’s name appears as the painter of these miniatures. The figures, monumental in appearance despite their small size, are all painted in grisaille against coloured backgrounds, and are markedly plastic in character. The illustration represents King David in three-quarters profile, seated on a great throne in the Gothic architectural style. The throne fills most of the space and sets off to perfection the poetic figure of the aged king playing on the lute.

The miniature representing the Prophet Isaiah is from the Psalter of the Duc de Berry.

John the Berry (1340-1416) had a long and productive career as a patron of the arts. Andr Beauneveu was employed to provide the figures of prophets and apostles for his Psalter.

Beauneveu was a sculptor, painter and miniaturist, one of the most important French artists of the period. Only a few of his works survived. Since 1364 he worked for King Charles V and was commissioned for four funeral monuments in the Abbey of St Denis in Saint-Denis. Later he went to England and Flanders. From 1386 until his death he worked for Prince of Berry.

The miniature shown here represents St Philip on a page from the Psalter of the Duc de Berry.
