This is a fine example of the luxuriant floral style that was widespread in the Dutch decorative arts in the third quarter of the 17th century. This form of decoration, derived directly from nature, first emerged in the Netherlands around 1610 in tapestry-weave tablecloths, and as the century progressed it evolved into an almost national style in many branches of applied arts.
