"Cathedraal"

by COLENBRANDER, Theodoor Christiaan Adriaan, Glazed pottery

Between 1920 and 1924, Colenbrander’s firm, N.V. Plateelbakkerij Ram in Arnhem, used exclusively his designs. There were 75 different designs with c. 700 different decorations, each with its own name. A large number of the works from this period was executed in enamel so that the areas of colour could be filled in completely, and so that it was possible to make two areas meet precisely. The five-piece decorative vase set called “Cathedraal” was made with this technique (examples at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in Arnhem). The excessive decoration on this set, which is made up of hundreds of areas of colour, is unusual in being symmetric.

At the Exposition internationale des arts dcoratifs et industriels modernes in Paris in 1925 this design won a gold medal.
