The pearls other jewellery and on her dress - a pearl being margarita in Latin - refer to her forename, and the tulip in the background to her surname, Tulp. Margaretha Tulp (1632-1709) was the daughter of Nicolaus Tulp, the famous Amsterdam physician and surgeon.
