Side Chair

by GAILLARD, Eugène, Walnut and embossed leather, 91 x 48 x 58 cm

Within his art pavilion at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, art dealer Siegfried Bing featured several rooms designed by architect and designer Eugne Gaillard. The exposition offered Gaillard, a relatively unknown name at the time, the first opportunity to exhibit his work publicly. Gaillard had created this side chair for the model dining room, and it was one of his most successful designs. With its abstract, curving walnut form, which appears to grow like tree branches, the chair epitomizes the Art Nouveau style popular at the time.

The chair was manufactured by Salon de l’Art Nouveau (Paris, 1895-1904)
