Children in the Garden
by PODKOWIŃSKI, Władysław, Oil on canvas, 47 x 62 cm
In 1889, Władysław Podkowiński and Jzef Pankiewicz of the Warsaw College of Art visited Paris for the World Fair. There they encountered Impressionism, and, through Theo van Gogh, the paintings of Czanne. The exposition of their own work in Warsaw in 1890 signaled the beginning of Impressionism there.
In the few years that remained to Podkowiński in his short life, he used very bright and sometimes strongly contrastive colours, split in accordance with divisionist principles, to paint typical Impressionist landscape and garden subjects.
