During his stay in Paris, T�pffer was exposed to the influence of Pierre Henri de Valenciennes, not only the acknowledged master of the paysage historique but the strongest advocate of plein-air painting. T�pffer was the first Swiss artist to embrace Valenciennes’s maxims on landscape painting, as seen in the present example.
