"Mademoiselle Cocyte in "La Belle Hélène"
by TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, Henri de, Watercolour and pencil on paper, 620 x 480 mm
The sick Lautrec spent the winter of 1900⁄1901 in Bordeaux, where he visited the Grand Thâtre and painted scenes from Isidore de Lara’s opera “Messaline” and Jacques Offenbach’s operetta “La Belle Hlne.” We know from a letter to his Parisian friend Joyant, however, that he was not enamoured of the actress playing the beautiful Hlne: “Hlne is played by a fat sow called Cocyte.”
