Here, he perhaps suggests the category’s classical roots: the Greek painter Zeuxis’s grapes, so lifelike that birds tried to eat them, and the split pomegranate recalling Demeter’s bargain, and announcing winter’s return, as Proserpina descends to Hades once more.
