BIGG, William Redmore
(b. 1755 Felsted, d. 1828 London)
English painter. He became a pupil at London’s Royal Academy in 1778 and studied under Edward Penny (1714-1791). He was elected a full member of the Academy in 1814.
Specialising particularly in domestic, sporting and genre scenes, he exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy throughout his life, although his work was also shown at the Free Society and at the British Institution, where he contributed to an exhibition in 1780.
Bigg produced many small portraits in oil and pastel, as well as rustic genre paintings. His genre paintings and portraits were highly popular in his day, the best engravers being used to render his work. He continued to exhibit his work until his death in 1828.
