CALSTER, Maarten van
(b. ~1574 Mechelen, d. 1628 Mechelen)
Flemish sculptor. In 1594 he became master as image cutters and upholsterer. He specialized in decorated crosses. He was active in Mechelen, Lier and Edegem.
Virgin and Child
This sculpture is a 20th-century copy of the original wooden statue, now in the Museum Hof van Busleyden, Mechelen. This original, in turn, is a copy of a statue by the medieval sculptor Andr� Beauneveu. This explain why this seventeenth-century statue has a Gothic feeling to it.
