CHARPENTIER, Jean-Baptiste the Elder

(b. 1728 Paris, d. 1806 Paris)

French painter. Little is known about this artist. He was born in Paris into a family originally from Normandy. He became member and professor of the Academy of St. Luke in 1760. He exhibited at the Academy from 1762 to 1774 and at the Salon de la Correspondance in 1780 and 1785.

He was the painter of the duc de Penthièvre. His oeuvre consists of mainly portraits, especially those of the members of the Penthièvre family, however, many genre scenes by him are also known.

The painting depicts the Duke Penthi�vre (1725-1793), his mother, the Counntess of Toulouse, his son, the Prince of Lamballe (1747-1768), the Princess of Lamballe (1749-1792), and her daughter, the future Duchessof Orl�ans) (1753-1821).
