Paolo Veronese

The engraving records a lost self-portrait by Veronese once owned by the Marquis d’Aguilles (1645—1709) in Aix. The Flemish engraver was commissioned to engrave around 118 reproductions of paintings in this once important collection, including works by Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, Titian, Tintoretto, and Annibale Carracci. They and the self-portrait of Veronese passed to the gallery collection of the Recueilles plus beaux tableaux du cabinet de Messire Jean-Baptiste Boyer, seigneur d’Aguilles, conseiller au Parlement de Provence, a Aix (Aix, 1709).
