The naval battle depicted here took place in October 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession, (1701-14), a conflict that arose out of the disputed succession to the throne of Spain following the death of the childless Charles II, the last of the Spanish Habsburgs.

A Boarding Scene

This painting probably depicts a boarding scene between the French boat “Bayonnaise” and the English boat “Embuscade” in the battle that took place on 14 December 1798. It was one of the fiercest episodes of the Franco-British war.
