FAYDHERBE, Maria

(b. 1587 Mechelen, d. 1643 Mechelen)

Flemish sculptor. She was the sister of Antoon and Hendrik Faydherbe (1574–1629, and the aunt of Lucas Faydherbe. (Another Maria Faydherbe was the daughter of Antoon).

She was not accepted as a member of the Guild of St Luke therefore she was forced to work in her family’s workshop, without being able to sign her own output, and indeed probably having her work signed by her male relations.

Although very few biographical details of her life survived, she is famous for the dispute she had with the masters of the Guild of St Luke.
