FREI, Sisto

(b. ~1480 Nürnberg, d. ~1525 Trento)

German sculptor, son of Enrico Frei from Nuremberg. He became citizen in Nuremberg and lived in Trento from 1511. His known works are the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni in the Cappella Colleoni, Bergamo, and a Crucifix with figures in Trento Cathedral.

The large wooden Crucifix stands in the Baroque Crucifix Chapel in Trento Cathedral. The chapel, with a square plan with a dome, was raised between 1682 and 1687 by the Prince Bishop Francesco Alberti Poja to house the Crucifix at the feet of which were promulgated the issues of the Council of Trent, whose sessions were held in the church’s presbytery from 1545 to 1563. The Crucifix was placed in the centre of the church and it was present in all the sessions of the Council.

The equestrian state is on the funerary monument of Bartolomeo Colleoni by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. Bartolomeo Colleoni (1400-1475) was an Italian condottiero, who became captain-general of the Republic of Venice.
