NÚÑEZ DELGADO, Gaspar

(b. ~1555 Ávila, d. 1606 Sevilla)

Spanish sculptor. He spent his active life in Seville, where he probably was the pupil of Jerónimo Hernández and the painter Pedro Delgado. His work announces the transition from Mannerism to Baroque in Spanish sculpture. He is the author of several sculpted crucifixes. As a painter he showed great skill in dealing with the anatomy of his figures.

This crucifix is characterized by a masterful command of anatomy and a profoundly human expression of anguish. The inscription in Hebrew and Greek at to the top of the cross reads: “This is Jesus the King of the Jews,” following the gospels of Matthew and Luke. A silver plaque set into the cross just below Christ’s feet is inscribed with the artist’s name and the date.
