Portrait of Edward Hyde

by REESBROECK, Jacob van, Oil on canvas, 121 x 100 cm

Jacob van Reesbroeck made a good living out of his portrait painting. The portrait of Edward Hyde illustrates the high quality of his style. The calculatedly nonchalant elegance and the tactile quality of the fabrics are more indicative of contemporary Dutch portrait painting in the style of Van der helst than of Van Dyck, who in all respect was much more influential in Flanders.

Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon was a British statesman who after the execution of Charles I of England left England and resided in Antwerp between 1649 and 1653 with his second wife and daughter.
