SERMARTELLI, Bartolomeo

(b. ~1535 Firenze, d. ~1600 Firenze)

Italian printmaker and publisher. He run a printshop (the Stamperia del Sermartelli) in Florence. He was the son of Michelangelo de’ Libri; he added to his name the last name of his patron, who belonged to the Martelli family.

He began printing in 1553, but until 1563 he worked little. In 1591 he was succeeded in the direction of the printshop by his son Michelangelo who continued printing until 1608.

Bartolomeo Sermartelli was an Italian printmaker and publisher in Florence. The present woodcuts, depicting different point of views Giambologna’s group Rape of the Sabines are taken from “Alcuni composizioni di diversi autori in lode del ritratto della Sabina,” published in Florence in 1583.
