The church of San Tom�s in �vila, a Dominican convent, was begun in 1483 at the behest of the Grand Inquisitor of the Catholic Kings. It was financed from confiscated Jewish property. Designed by Mart�n de Sol�rzano (active 1482, died 1506) and constructed of granite, the decoration is restrained. The aesthetic appeal rests on technical and material considerations, which at the same time reflect the austere faith of the patrons.
