WEBER, Giovanni Zanobio

(b. 1737 Firenze, d. 1806 Firenze)

Giovanni Zanobio Weber was an Italian medallist. He was the son of a German (or Austrian) officer of the Grand Duke of Tuscany’s bodyguard. He worked mostly in Florence, the period of his greatest activity being between 1761 and 1786.

His brother, Lorenzo Maria Weber (d. 1764), was also medallist who learned the art of medal-engraving under Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi, and worked at Florence from 1720 to 1757, chiefly employed by the Medici family.

Medal of Grand Duke Cosimo III

This medal is part of a series dedicated to the Medici. It was coined rather than cast, perhaps because Weber was actually more expert in coining money than in making medals.
