WIDERIN, Peter

(b. 1684 Stanz, d. 1760 Sankt Pölten)

Austrian sculptor. He received the citizenship of the city of St. Pölten in 1715 and married the 19 year-old Maria Anna, a daughter of the master builder Jakob Prandtauer.

Widerin worked as a sculptor mainly on the construction projects of his father-in-law. He created among others the colossal statues of St. Leopold and St. Koloman at the main portal of the Melk Abbey (designed by Lorenzo Mattielli, c. 1690-1748), designed numerous objects in the former St. Pölten Abbey (today the cathedral) and created the Michaelsaltar on Sonntagsberg. His works include the Calvary group in St. Pölten as well as Nepomuk statues in Spratzern, Ochsenburg and Stattersdorf.
