DOMÈNECH I MONTANER, Lluís

(b. 1849 Barcelona, d. 1923 Barcelona)

Catalan architect. He took a degree in architecture in 1873 at the University of Madrid and quickly became well-known, thanks to successes in public competitions. In 1875, he began a long teaching period at the architectural school in Barcelona, becoming director in 1910.

He built the Grand Hotel (destroyed) and Café-Restaurant for the World Exposition in Barcelona in 1888, otherwise, his work was mainly private houses (e.g. Casa Navàs, Reus; Casa Fuster, Barcelona). With its polychromy and ornamentation and appropriate structural solutions achieved on a difficult site, the Palau de la Música, Barcelona (1908) is his most outstanding work. The Hospital de Sant Pau complex, Barcelona (1910), demonstrates his skill in combining brick and stone and employing ceramic decoration.

His style was imbued with Catalan Gothic architecture, which he varied with elements of Classicism, Renaissance and Japanese art. He is considered one of the protagonists of Catalan architectural Modernism, characterized by the doctrine of Rationalism and contrasted with the more expressionist Modernism headed by Gaudí. His essay “En busca de una arquitectura nacional” in the magazine La Renaixença (February 1878) proposed the renewal of tradition and upheld the authenticity of architecture from a rational point of view.

Casa Fuster: exterior view

The building was commissioned by Mariano Fuster from Mallorca. The works began in 1908, and the Fuster i Fabra family occupied its first floor in 1911. That year, Casa Fuster was considered the most expensive house in the city due to the material used in its construction, among them white marble of the highest quality.

The Casa Fuster is a mature work executed in Domnech i Montaner’s decorative so-called ‘floral’ style. It was designed with three faades of considerable impact due to their details and expressiveness.

In 2000, the building was renovated and transformed into a hotel.

Castell dels Tres Dragons: general view

The “Castell dels Tres Dragons” (“Castle of the three dragons”) was built as the Caf-Restaurant, part of the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition. This building demonstrates two of Domnech i Montaner’s signature qualities: his rationalist concern and his predilection for brick. After the exhibition, it was here that he and some other artists set up a workshop for architecture-related arts in line with the Modernist ideal of artistic integration.

From 1920 to 2010, this building housed the Barcelona Zoology Museum.

Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau: main façade

The former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in the neighbourhood of El Guinard, Barcelona, is a complex of 26 buildings, built between 1901 and 1930, designed by the Catalan modernisme architect Llus Domnech i Montaner. It evolved from a medieval charitable home to a modern hospital since its founding about 600 years ago. It was a fully functioning hospital until June 2009, then underwent restoration for use as a museum and cultural centre, which opened in 2014.

The Hospital de Sant Pau complex demonstrates Llus Domnech i Montaner’s skill in combining brick and stone, and in employing ceramic decoration. The chosen building materials are made of durable building materials, which fulfil the function of a hospital. As part of modernistic architecture, we find a striking mix of brick, natural stone and ceramics. Red brick was used exclusively for faades, combined with natural stone. For all decorative, architectural elements, reliefs and sculptures stone was used. Shiny ceramic stone was applied in the cladding of the domes, roofs and mosaics, and interior ceilings.

The Palau de la Msica Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music) is a concert hall in Barcelona. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect Llus Domnech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfe Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixena (Catalan Rebirth). It was inaugurated on 9 February 1908.

The Palau de la Msica, with its polychromy and ornamentation and its appropriate structural solutions achieved on a difficult site, is his most outstanding work. The double faade with an inner glass wall independent of the outer structure is a characteristic Domnech element.

The decoration of the interior includes the use of tiles, mosaics and some splendid stained glass, especially the large ‘Sun’ in the centre of the ceiling.
