Mary Ann Waltham was Lady in waiting to Mary Queen of Scots. Her portrait, signed with the initials of Fran�ois Quesnel, is typical of the last phase of French sixteenth-century portraiture, when the naturalism of Fran�ois Clouet has been stylised so that the modelling almost disappears and the portrait is dominated by the flat linear pattern.
